As I write this, we are preparing for the onset of Cyclone Vaianu. Our Civil Defence and Council teams have been preparing early, ensuring drains are cleared and crews are on standby ready for action. Hopefully, it changes course, as we are still in clean up mode after some of the previous weather events we’ve experienced lately. Here in Maungaturoto, our library is temporarily closed due to a leak in the building next door that is also affecting the library. The closure is a precautionary measure while our team awaits testing and assessment results. Once we have this information, we will know what repairs are needed and can plan from there.
On a brighter note, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying attending lots of local events and getting the opportunity to meet and talk with community members. The Paparoa A&P Show and Northland Field Days were a great chance to meet other rural folk and hear first-hand what’s most important to our ratepayers. We also had a stand at the Mangawhai Beach Market as part of our early engagement, looking towards Long Term Planning.
The Tinopai wharf working group and community members are working collaboratively to find the best solution for replacing the Tinopai Wharf. This is such a major asset for the Kaipara District and it is wonderful to see so many passionate people pulling together with a common goal.
I’m looking forward to taking part in the Maungaturoto Anzac Parade this year. There are lots of parades and services held across Kaipara, it will be neat to see them very well attended. Lest We Forget.
Another great event to add to your diaries is the grand re-opening of the Coates Memorial Church in Matakohe. The historic building has recently undergone extensive restoration. The church is a national memorial to Joseph Gordon Coates, Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1925 to 1928. The restoration project began in October last year and is due for completion in next month. The date for the reopening to the public is Sunday May 24 with a service beginning at 11am. This will include entertainment from students and will be followed by a luncheon in the Matakohe Hall. The Kauri Museum is offering discounted entry fees for the day. This amazing museum is well worth a visit. Also on offer for the day is the opportunity to visit Ruatana House, which is the historic home of Gordon Coates, just a short drive from Matakohe Village. Come along and enjoy a great day out in the Otamatea area – I hope to see you there.
