Kaipara residents and visitors have been blessed with a great mix of weather this summer. We’ve had some gorgeous hot and sunny days perfect for hay making and for holidaymakers to enjoy our beautiful beaches, walks, lakes and parks. Some decent rain thrown in the mix has kept the grass and gardens growing, and the water tanks topped up.
In December, a group of us went out to Tinopai to meet with the locals. We got to see and hear first-hand the needs of both the community and the Coastguard in regards to the wharf, which is currently closed. This is a project I’m really looking forward to being part of. We are anticipating that some great team work between Council and Locals will see some exciting progress on the project this year.
On Saturday January 24, the Poutu Lighthouse Challenge raised funds for Cancer Society Northland. Councillor Nathan put many hours into organising this awesome event. The Rapid Relief Team supports the event, refuelling all the participants at the finish line. A fun day out and a chance to enjoy the beautiful Poutu Peninsula while walking, running or cycling the 17km from Pouto Point to the lighthouse return.
On Sunday January 25, Pahi Regatta Raft Race provides more fun and entertainment for locals and visitors. Another great day out in Kaipara.
I am looking forward to the Waitangi Day in Mangawhai celebrations on February 6. The day will start at 9am at Mangawhai Museum, where there will be a traditional welcome and speeches, plus free museum entry all day. At 11am, there will be sailing and waka ama at Lincoln Street Reserve, followed by live entertainment at MAZ from 5pm to 7.30pm.
Paparoa A&P show is happening on February 7 this year. A great day out for all the family with lots of animals to see including horses, cattle, sheep and goats. There will be plenty of stalls to browse, as well as the traditional events and exhibits of art, craft, baking and homegrown produce in the hall. This classic rural show will have something for everyone. I look forward to meeting and catching up with locals and visitors at the Kaipara District Council stand, please pop in and say hi, we’d love to chat with you.
It’s really wonderful to see all the great events taking place across the district over the summer period. Thanks to all the volunteers and groups who have put in so much time and effort to bring these and other events to Kaipara. I’m looking forward to a busy and productive year ahead working for the ratepayers, as well as getting involved with more community groups to offer my support in all they do. I’m always here to listen and support the ratepayers to get the most out of living in the mighty Kaipara District. Best wishes for a fantastic New Year.
