Many winter sports teams missed out on final games because of the lockdown, but Hibiscus Hockey hopes it has found a way for its Primary School teams to end the season on a high note.

Hibiscus Hockey Trust chair Merv Huxford says lockdown forced the cancellation of the final three games for 43 teams from 10 primary schools who play on its Millwater turf.

He says sponsors North Harbour Law and Ōrewa Beach Fish and Chips have committed to supporting Hibiscus Hockey’s first ever Primary Schools Tournament.

It will be held on Saturday, October 16, provided Auckland is in Alert Level 1 or 2. “If it goes ahead, we expect more than 400 people through the turf on the day, with all teams playing more than one shorter form of the game,” Merv says.

All entry and hire fees and spot prizes are being covered by the sponsors.

The schools have been approached to register for the competition, and Merv says it will provide an upbeat and exciting end to the Covid-disrupted season, hopefully making up for those lost games.
