The women’s refuge for Rodney is seeking donations of new linens and homewares this month to give its safe house a much-needed update.
Hestia Women’s Refuge is looking for a range of neutral-coloured items, such as bedding, towels, crockery, cutlery and lamps, to create a space where women and their children can feel safe and secure.
“Our safe house is more than just shelter – it’s a sanctuary where women and children begin to heal and find peace,” a spokeswoman says. “We’re creating a calming, nurturing environment where families can rest, recover and rebuild their lives during their most vulnerable times.”
This will be the first major revamp for the Rodney safe house for many years.
“Our house is always full and has a very hard life, so every contribution will help us create a peaceful space of safety, hope, and healing.”
Demand is increasing – from July to September, the number of women and children needing a bed rose from 154 to a record 234. Since Hestia can only accommodate a limited number at the safe house, everyone else has to be put up in local hotels and motels at full cost, so the refuge is always in need of cash donations as well.
New items needed include: single and double mattress protectors, sheet sets and duvet covers; pillows, protectors and pillowcases; bath and hand towels; face cloths; bathmats; adults and kids bathrobes and slippers; dinner sets; coffee cups; teapots; pots and pans; teatowels; easy-to-use coffee machine; bedside lamps; rugs; fake plants and wall art.
