An expansion of the Mangawhai Heads surf beach carpark has been completed ahead of summer, adding 67 spaces, four accessible parks and improved facilities for buses.
The project also includes a dedicated bus drop-off area and an expanded bus park capable of accommodating a 12-metre coach.
Kaipara District Council Mayor Jonathan Larsen said the additional capacity would improve access for residents and visitors during the busy summer season.
“Mangawhai Heads surf beach is one of our district’s most popular destinations, particularly during the busy summer season when the carpark has thousands of visitors each day.
“These upgrades make it easier for people to access the area, find a car park and make the most of their visit,” he said.
The redevelopment of the car park kicked off in May and was expected to take 10 weeks.
The works were carried out by local contractor Wharehine and were delivered in line with the Mangawhai Heads Reserve Concept Plan, which was adopted in 2025 following community consultation.
While the additional parking spaces will help accommodate growing numbers of visitors, the council is also encouraging people to use Mangawhai’s free summer bus service, which operates during the peak holiday season and helps reduce congestion and parking pressure around the surf beach.
